Days of Importance

ANZAC Day - 25 April 2007 - West Australia

A note and some photographs from the WA Chairman of SAMVOA after the 2007 ANZAC Day parade in Perth.

Once again it was a great honour and privilege for us to march in this year's Anzac Day parade.

There were 18 members who marched and the squad was led by Peter Neunborn.Other Veterans who attended were; Riaan de Villiers, Gerhard Slabber, Halvor Harris, Peter Colvin, Ben Opperman, Dawn Weller, Andrew Scoggings, Ron Fouche, Mark Coldrey, Kevin van der Mescht, Darryl Visser, Leon Johnson, Michael Sutherland, Garth Pienaar, Braam Coetzee, Roy Chilshom and Kenny Currin.

Pride of place was given to a visitor from South Africa, Mrs Angela Sibbald, who marched in memory of her father, Lt Colonel William Chaddwick.
He was a Staff Officer with the 2nd SA Division under the command of General H B Klopper and was among the 10 000 South African soldiers taken prisoner by Rommel when Tobruk fell in 1942.

I found the receipt of the following email from Mrs Rachel Human, the day after the Anzac parade, particularly poignant as it exemplifies the vision and purpose of what SAMVOA is all about.

Hello Garth

I am the widow of Andries Human (Skillie) a parabat that died (was declared missing in action)at Cassinga Angola on the 4th May 1978. My daughter was 8 months old at the time. In August she will be 30, I came to Australia in November last year on her visa as a dependant parent.

I think that it is great that our men are remembered here. I have not packed out all my belongs yet as I am moving soon to Keymer Str Belmont, I think not too far from your club. I did however give most of what I had to a collector just before I left South Africa. If I find anything of value when I unpack I will contact you.

Perhaps you can let me know what will be of interest.

Regards

Rachel Human

A big thank you to all those Veterans who marched and to all those Veterans who were unable to make the parade, we look forward to marching with you next year.

Age will not weary them,
Nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun
and in the morning,
We Will Remember Them.
