This section of our web pages contains news from South Africa that relates to the SAMVOA organisation.
The following news was sent to us from a SAMVOA veteran who visited South Africa in the second quarter of 2007.
Invitation to visit the Aloe/White Ensign MOTH Shellhole in Walmer, Port EliZabeth:
On my recent return to South Africa, I was privileged to be invited by Moth Philip Niman to a meeting at the Aloe / White Ensign Shellhole in Walmer, Port Elizabeth on Wednesday 09 May 2007, where I had the opportunity of talking to those present about SAMVOA and Anzac Day.
They were most interested to hear about what we are trying to do in Australia and were amazed at the number of people who attend the parade as well as the number of spectators, of all ages who line the streets to honour the fallen.
It was a great evening of camaraderie and it was good to see that the three MOTH ideals of True Comradeship, Mutual Help and Sound Memory are still very much alive and well in South Africa and that the Flame of Remembrance still burns brightly.
I wish to extend a very big thank you to the Moths for making me feel most welcome, for the interest shown in SAMVOA and to those individuals who donated some memorabilia for our display cabinet. It is all greatly appreciated.
I also attended the 80th Anniversary parade of this magnificent Order on Sunday 13 May 2007 when a contingent of 80 Moths and Mothwa (some in their nineties) marched from the Shellhole to the Cenotaph in Walmer, Port Elizabeth. Among those marching were Moths Harold and Philip Niman. It is not often that one gets to see a father march with his son, or visa versa and I know that after talking with Philip, it was a great honour and privilege for him to march with his father who fought in World War 2, Philip having served with the SADF on the Border.
A special word of thanks to Moth Dave MacDonald for arranging that a link to the SAMVOA website from the official MOTH website. This is a very interesting website, detailing information on on a truly magnificent remembrance organisation. Please feel free to have a look on www.moth.org.za
