Adriaan has passed along the following SITREP regarding Colonel Breytenbach:

"Hi all,
Well everyone, the major scare is off, the Colonel is back home after a five hour drive from Cape Town. Richard flew down to CT and drove his parents back to Sedgefield on Friday, the journey taking as long as the by-pass operation took.
I spoke to Colonel Breytenbach at length last night and he sounds in great spirits, but he intimated that he realizes that he will have to take it "easy" for a while.
The support, kindness and generosity displayed by the SF, Paras, 32bn guys, as well as the many other well wishers, touched the Breytenbach family deeply, and they once again express their sincerest thanks.
ln conversation, Colonel Breytenbach told me the following:
A chap ( who will remain nameless ), had been hounding me to find out where the Colonel was convalescing . I made it very clear that he did not want to entertain visitors, but when told that the visitors were flying down from Angola especially to see Colonel Breytenbach, the Col. relented and agreed to meet with them for no more than 30 minutes. I then arranged with Gary Swardt (Blackie), ex 32bn, to meet these okes and to take them to where they ( Col B) were staying.
Now this is where the story gets better! They, ie Blackie and the guys from Angola, arrived later than arranged, and had a strip torn off them by JDB immediately, as he had delayed his morning walk to wait for them! The tongue lashing was taken in the spirit it was given, and after apologies were offered and accepted, the delegation from Angola presented Col Breytenbach with a sum of money donated by the Chief of the Angolan Army, as erstwhile FAPLA adversary of the Colonel, to assist with his expenses incurred by the by-pass operation!
ln all the years that I have had the honour of knowing Col Breytenbach, it is the first time that I am aware of that he was at a loss for words....
lt goes to show the respect that the old SADF enjoy from their previous foes, and vice versa. ln this regard particularly, every 04 May, the date of the Cassinga assault, homage and respect is paid to the Paratroopers as well as the SWAPO cadres who fought and died that day.
Let this be a lesson to us never to lose our self respect, men like you have the right to hold your heads high for serving your country in the fine manner that you did!
Well done everyone, and especially Blackie for being CPO, driver and general BIG help while Colonel Breytenbach was in hospital- baie dankie Blackie, jy's 'n regte staatmaaker!
Well all, that concludes this crisis that we all faced, let us give thanks to God, again not forgetting our comrades in far flung places and their families, keep them safe and out of harms way...
Kind regards, Manie"
